Garbage Collection


How much does the curbside collection service cost?

As of January 2, 2026, curbside collection in the universal area is $16.52 per month, billed annually as a non-ad valorem assessment on your tax bill. The total annual charge for curbside collection appearing on your tax bill is $198.24.
As of January 2, 2026, curbside collection in the subscription area is $16.96 per month, billed quarterly. The total for curbside collection is $50.88 per quarter.


These prices include twice per week collection of garbage, once per week collection of recycling, once per week collection of yard waste and 6 bulk waste collections per calendar year, upon request.


 Will you service the City of Brooksville?

City of Brooksville provides their own collection service. City residents can call (352) 540-3810 for questions about service within the City limits.


How do I properly place my garbage for collection day?

Place your cart at the curb by 6 a.m. on your designated collection day. Carts must be positioned at least 3 feet away from mailboxes, parked vehicles, and other obstacles, and should be free from any overhead obstructions such as tree limbs or power lines. Do not place items on top of the cart. Improperly placed carts may not be serviced.


What items can I place in my garbage cart?

You may place household waste such as kitchen and bathroom trash, packaging materials, clothing, and other general household items in your cart. All items must fit inside the cart with the lid fully closed. Please make sure all garbage is bagged and contained within the cart.


What items are not allowed in my garbage cart?

Do not place recycling, yard waste, medical waste (including red bags or needles), hazardous materials, paint, chemicals, motor oil, liquids, dead animals, hot ashes, large auto parts, tires, car batteries, or construction debris such as bricks, blocks, or large pieces of wood in your cart.. Can I leave extra garbage outside my cart for pickup?

No, all garbage should be bagged and placed in your garbage cart.


Can I request a second garbage cart?

Yes, you may request an additional garbage cart. A fee of $13.65 per quarter will be added to your account, along with a one-time delivery fee of $110.00.


Can I purchase my own garbage cart from a local store for automated collection?

No, all garbage carts should have the County Logo and phone number.


What should I do if my garbage cart is damaged, missing, or needs replacement?

If your garbage cart is damaged by our collection truck or through normal wear and tear, it will be repaired or replaced at no charge. Carts that are damaged due to customer negligence may be replaced with a fee of up to $75, which includes delivery.


If your cart has been stolen, please report it to the Hernando County Sheriff’s Office and notify us at 352.741.5494.


To request a repair, replacement, or redelivery, contact us at 352.741.5494. Repairs or replacements will be completed within seven (7) days of your request.


While waiting for your new or repaired cart, you may place trash in bags or other containers for collection. Please remember that customers are responsible for keeping carts clean and sanitary.


Recycling & Yard Waste


How should I place my recycling for collection?

Recycling is collected once per week. Residents are provided with two 18-gallon open-top bins for dual-stream recycling:

One bin for paper and cardboard and one bin for rigid plastics, aluminum, and tin.


You may also use your own similar-sized bins if you need extra capacity. Please sort materials correctly into the two bins. Only these items are accepted for curbside recycling at this time. If your bins are lost or damaged, replacement bins will be provided within seven (7) days of your request.


How should I place my yard waste for collection?

Yard waste is collected once per week at the curb. It must be free of regular trash and may be placed in:

Customer-supplied containers (up to 50 gallons), Paper or plastic bags, Tied bundles

 

What are the yard waste limits per pickup?

The yard waste limits are as follows: Maximum of up to 15 items (any combination of containers, bags, or bundles)

Maximum weight: 50 pounds Maximum dimensions: 4 feet long and 4 inches in diameter

If you have more yard waste than the limit, you may request additional collection for a fee.


Can I pay for an additional yard waste pick up?

Yes, it would be a total amount of $34.50/each additional pick-up, payment must be made before pick-up is scheduled.


Is my landscaper allowed to place yard waste at the curb?

No. Yard waste placed by landscapers or other third parties cannot be collected as part of your curbside service. Only yard waste generated by the household will be picked up.


Can I dispose of my Christmas tree?

Yes, remember to place at the curb for collection, cut into max 4 feet long, 4 inches in diameter, and free of decorations, lights, and other non-organic materials


Bulk Items & Service Schedule


How many bulk waste pickups am I allowed each year?

Customers are entitled to six (6) bulk waste collections per calendar year, available upon request.


What items are considered bulk waste?

Bulk waste includes furniture sets and large household items. A “set” is a complete furniture group purchased together, such as:

  • Dining room set: table, chairs, hutch
  • Bedroom set: bed, dressers, nightstands
  • Living room set: couch, loveseat, chair, end tables, coffee table

Are there limits on the number of items per pickup?

Yes. Each pickup may include:

  • 1 furniture set,
  • or 7–10 individual items,
  • or Up to 200 cubic feet of material.

If you have more items than the limits allow, you can request additional service for a fee.


How much is an additional bulk pick up after the allotted 6 bulk pick-ups?

An additional bulk pick up is $50.00/each pick up paid before service is scheduled.


How do I schedule a bulk waste pickup?
Contact us to request a bulk collection.


How long will it take for my bulk items to be collected?

Bulk waste will be picked up within 7 business days of your request or after it is observed on a collection route.


How should I place my bulk items for collection?
Place items at the curb, separated from regular trash and yard waste. Furniture sets should remain together as a set.


Special Services & Moving


Is there assistance available for elderly or disabled residents who cannot take carts to the curb?

Yes, we offer Door Service for elderly or disabled residents.


What is Door Service?
Door Service is a special collection service where garbage, recycling, and yard waste carts are collected directly from a handicapped resident’s door, garage, or other mutually agreed location instead of the curb.


Who is eligible for Door Service?
Door Service is available if all of the following are true:

  • The person is entitled to receive residential collection service.
  • The person has requested Door Service and the County has approved it.
  • There are no able-bodied adults living in the household.
  • The County has notified us that Door Service should be provided.

Is there an additional cost for Door Service?
No. Door Service is provided at no additional cost to the resident or the County.


Where will my carts be collected under Door Service?
The point of collection can be your garage door, front door, side yard.


Will my carts be returned to the same location after collection?
Yes. We will return your carts to the point of collection after emptying them.


When will Door Service be provided?
Door Service will be performed on your regular scheduled collection day for residential service.
